Internships

Internships can be helpful in applying your new knowledge of the cooking industry to practical situations. Most internships are never publicized, but being proactive can prove rewarding in finding a job in your field of interest.

The following are some ideas for helping you get a position in the culinary arts:
  • Inquire with the school you are attending. Ask financial aid, admissions, career placement centers, staff, and even faculty for knowledge of available internships. It is best to get the word out that you are looking for a position, and the type of position you are looking for, so that you can increase your chances of finding the right internship.
  • Visit local restaurants, hotels, convention centers, catering businesses, and tourist sites. There may be a use for an intern at these locations, especially during the summer months when tourism is high. Be sure to mention the program you are enrolled in or if you have already obtained any certificates or degrees in your area.
  • Don't take just any internship position. Be somewhat picky in choosing an internship. If you are in a pastry arts program, then it would probably not be useful to work a summer as a server for a catering business. However, an internship at a bakery or restaurant that offers a variety of opportunities for you practice your pastry skills or learn from others in the field is likely to be extremely beneficial.
  • Keep in mind that most schools will offer an internship opportunity either through off campus resources - or more then likely throught an on campus enviroment where the student works with both his teacher and the public to pratice real world, hand on culinary experience.

For an example of these school based programs, consider advice from one of our favorite schools- California Culinary Academy:

"Whether you're planning a stand-up cocktail party, a full-course dinner party, a wedding reception, or a corporate event, California Culinary Academy offers a premier event facility and a unique dining experience. Meals are prepared and served by Academy students under the direction of our Academy chef instructors.

Our elegant main dining room, the Carême Room, features an awesome 40-foot barrel-vaulted ceiling and filtered skylights. You can watch our culinary students and chef instructors in action with views into various production kitchens and demonstration classrooms. The Carême Room serves sophisticated and artfully presented international cuisine Tuesday through Friday for lunch and dinner. Don't miss the extravagant buffets featured every Thursday and Friday!"
